Breezy conditions are expected across all of western Montana and north central Idaho today as a cold front moves through the region. Wind gusts of 30-35 mph will be common from noon to 6 PM, with gusts as high as 45 mph possible across Lemhi County eastward into southwest Montana. The primary concerns will be for choppy conditions on area lakes as well as increased fire danger in southwest Montana, where winds and low humidity will create conditions that could allow new fires to grow quickly. In addition to the winds, thunderstorms are expected to develop by the afternoon and evening. Storms look most likely across northwest Montana as well as across southwest Montana. The main threat with storms will be lightning, small hail and gusty winds. There is a 10-20 percent chance that a storm could become strong enough in southwest Montana to produce locally damaging winds.
