Eight businesses registered in two cities found within Monroe County during January

There were eight businesses that registered in cities within Monroe County during January, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

This is 11 percent less than the month before, when nine businesses were registered.

Monroeville registered the most businesses in Monroe County.

More than 99 percent of Alabama's businesses are considered small, with more than 47 percent of Alabama's employees working for a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A Civic Economics study found $100 spent at a locally-owned business puts $47 back into the local economy while the total is just $13 for non-local businesses.
