Remembering Officer Gary Wayne Heath of Greenville

1

On this day in 1994, Officer Gary Wayne Heath of Greenville was shot and killed at 4:00 am by a suspect who was robbing a convenience store. During the robbery, the suspect also killed Pam Scruggs, who was working in the store.

14 days later the gunman would also kill Deputy Sheriff Len J. Rowell of the Pearl River County, Mississippi, and Lieutenant Coy Smith of the Alabama Public Service Commission when each officer recognized the gunman and attempted to arrest him for the murder of Officer Heath. The gunman would later commit suicide when cornered by FBI agents in Baldwin County.

Officer Heath had served with the Greenville Police Department for 10 months. He was survived by his parents and brother.
