Clarke County had 138 students ready for college in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Alabama Department of Education. This represents 79.8% of the 173 pupils in that year’s graduating cohort.

College readiness in the county decreased compared to the previous school year, when 151 students were considered prepared for college.

Across Clarke County, Clarke County High School stood out, with almost 80.9% of students set to graduate considered ready for college. Meanwhile, Jackson High School ranked last, with only 79% meeting the benchmark.

College readiness in the district varied based on students’ ethnicity. 31.2% of Black or African American students were considered ready for college in the 2023-24 school year. These rankings may not reflect absolute accuracy, as data for small student groups may have been suppressed to protect student privacy.

A recent study by WalletHub classified Alabama as one of the least-educated states in the U.S., ranking it the 8th worst in America in terms of class size, student performance, funding, safety, and instructor credentials.
