In the 2022-23 school year, 67.9% of Black or African American students in Conecuh County schools met Alabama’s college readiness criteria, according to the Alabama Department of Education.
Of the 120 students assessed for college readiness in the county, 55 were Black or African American and met college readiness standards.
Countywide, Hillcrest High School had the highest percentage of Black or African American students ready for college.
Alabama ranks 50th among U.S. states for public education, according to the 2024 World Population Review, placing as the second worst in overall school performance—just above Arizona, which ranked last. The ranking reflects weak outcomes across K-12 performance, school funding, higher education quality, and safety, with particularly poor marks for test scores, graduation rates, and school resources.
