FOIA Request to Coastal Alabama Community College – North Regarding Chinese National Students on May 16, 2025.

As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at the South Alabama Times have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Coastal Alabama Community College – North. This request seeks detailed information concerning Chinese National students currently enrolled at the institution.

Specifically, we are requesting documents or lists that identify all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments of study. If privacy concerns necessitate redaction, we have asked for aggregated totals by department instead. Additionally, we seek information on scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. Furthermore, we have requested details on any recipients of scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.

In an effort to understand how the university safeguards its intellectual property and confidential information, we have also asked for any policies or procedures related to monitoring students, including those who are Chinese Nationals.

This request is made not only in our capacity as a media organization but also on behalf of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. As members of this coalition, which aids media companies and public advocacy groups in uncovering government actions through Freedom of Information laws, we emphasize the importance of access to public records for maintaining transparency and holding institutions accountable.

We look forward to receiving the requested information and will continue to keep our readers informed about developments in this matter.
