Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the senior population is increasing nationwide while younger age groups are declining. From 2020 through 2024, residents 65 and older rose by 13%, while those under age 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the previous century, the older adult population in the United States has grown significantly, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
Research published in 2021 found that close to half of this demographic—about 28 million—may require some form of long-term services and supports. It also projects that more than one-third could eventually need to reside in a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
